Texas Attacks Immigrants
On December 18, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed Texas State Law SB4 giving police the right to arrest people suspected of illegally entering the US. You do not have to be caught illegally crossing the border and can be stopped anywhere in Texas if the police decide that you look like you have illegally crossed. Abbott posted the Texas National Guard on the Rio Grande border to enforce this law.
The new law continues Texas’s relentless attacks on our class. It is the third move that violates federal law and attempts to destroy what little democratic rights immigrants on the border have. This comes as Texas has bussed over 80,000 immigrants to major ‘democratically’ controlled target cities.
The broad and harsh repercussions of a vague law targeting “people suspected of illegally entering the US” are obvious, as shown by the effects of Texas’s vague law on abortion and the harshest voter suppression laws in the country! This is also the state where the lynching-by-dragging of James Byrd Jr. took place in 1998, where Sandra Bland died in Texas State Police custody in 2015, and where, in 2023, there were mass resignations from the Austin police department after the city passed one of the very few defund the police measures in the country.
This attack on democracy is part of the of the southern fascist playbook. It reflects the complete takeover of Texas by the oil industry, which has kept Abbott in power alongside of his Attorney General henchman, Ken Paxton. As the power of the oil industry weakens, they are using terror and attacks on democracy to maintain control.
On January 3, the US Department of Justice sued Texas to stop the enforcement of SB4. But this action will not change the situation. Indeed, we know that neither of the two major political parties of capitalism can address immigration.
Immigration is a global issue reflecting an economic revolution that is “creating a new class of displaced workers, who must try to find work in a system that no longer needs them. They are part-time, contingent, minimum and sub-minimum wage or unemployed workers, including vast numbers of refugees, migrants, people of color, women and youth.” (LRNA Program)
Immigration is part of our struggle for peace and justice.
“The purpose of the LRNA is to build consciousness and unity among the most impacted workers, to be able to secure the needs of humanity and avoid the destitution and environmental disaster threatening life on our planet as we know it.” (LRNA Program)

“Our country and the world stand at a crossroads. Humanity has the potential for economic security and abundance. A community of the people, by the people, and for the people, where children can grow in peace, is possible as never before. Or–if we do nothing—we face increasingly unlivable conditions caused by private ownership of the wealth that human labor has created. The purpose of the League of Revolutionaries for a New America is to build consciousness and unity among the most impacted workers, to be able to secure the needs of humanity, and avoid the destitution and environmental disaster threatening life on our planet as we know it.”
