Food Stamps Cuts on March 1, 2023

Listening to the League– A late comedic genius once told the story of a man who was at a mystery location without his wife’s knowledge. The wife did discover the truth and directly went to that spot where she shouted and banged on the door demanding entry. The shocked husband immediately flung open the door and said these words…”Are you going to believe what I say, or believe your lying eyes?” The League offers a perspective based on facts that should be listened to.

In May of 2021, persons already entitled to receive Food Stamps were given an additional amount because the Covid-19 pandemic was especially harmful to low and moderate-income families who were unable to manage with so few resources. Americans witnessed the daily long car lines lining up for miles to receive food baskets all over the country as some needlessly confessed their SHAME at having to accept charity. These critical funds lifted some 4 million families out of food/poverty because they were finally able to purchase enough to feed their families each month. The food program ended March 1, 2023…imagine that. This is no small measure to be reckoned with. If the family HAD been receiving $281 per month which included that Covid food boost, after March 1st, they receive $71/per month. A family of three receiving $740/per month – now receives $320. If a family was receiving $939 each month, they started to receive $429 beginning in March 2023. It is not difficult to see a pattern.

Many across the nation are painfully aware of this issue while low-income families are even more aware as they are the target of this unconscionable action taken in broad daylight. A section of the nation is being punished because they are poor so to the horror of us all, this action takes food out of the mouths of millions. The League condemns this act of domestic torture. The League is highlighting this act that is directed toward one class of people and asks the question, “What are the rest of us prepared to do?” Believe your lying eyes because we are all able to testify about what we are seeing. Listen to the League… Maureen Taylor, State Chairperson/MI Welfare Rights Org
