Join us for a deeper dive into Abolition fundamentals by focusing on the work of Ruthie Gilmore, revolutionary Abolitionist Thinker, and Activist!
Ruth Wilson Gilmore is one of the world’s leading theorists and activists for Abolition, not only of the prison system but also the “prison state” — the government’s “organized abandonment” of communities facing destitution, especially people of color, and the government’s “organized violence” used to control our communities and enforce systemic racial oppression. In other words, Ruthie is envisioning the new society we want and need!
These teach-ins will give us an opportunity to explore the context, theory, and practice of Ruthie’s work, and especially how “big picture” study and understanding create a basis for deeper and wider solidarity in our day-to-day struggle resisting and defeating the prison industrial complex.
We will discuss short selected readings and exchange practical ideas for enlarging and increasing the impact of our work.
You should attend if you are wondering how our work around particular reforms relates to the societal transformation of the prison state. No matter the particular issues you are dealing with, our movements are coming together around a common vision and we need to make the path forward!
