Tries to Silence Gaza Protest Vote
On February 27, one hundred thousand primary voters in Michigan sent shock waves through the Democratic Party by voting “uncommitted”. These voters objected to U.S. military and diplomatic support for Israeli-imposed genocide in Gaza and were coordinated by the multi-faith, multicultural “Listen to Michigan” network. On March 5 and 12, primary voters across 11 states followed suit by voting “uncommitted” or “leaving it blank.” By March 19 the Democratic Party had heard enough and canceled the Florida primary, and refused to count blank or wrote in ballots in Illinois and Ohio.
Arizona does not allow write-in or blank ballots, so Vote Ceasefire AZ urged voters to vote for Marianne Williamson, a former candidate whose name was still on the March 19 ballot. The coalition stated that voting for Williamson was “not an endorsement of her as a candidate. This is just being tactical and using her name to achieve what we want to achieve.”* The goal was 10,000 votes. Williamson received 14,229 votes.
All of the attempts to block and hinder pro-ceasefire votes are designed to silence our protest, while Biden continues supporting the Israeli genocide of the Palestinian people.
The genocide in Gaza has the full support of the U.S. political leadership and their arms merchants. Children in Gaza are starving to death. Instead of demanding that Israeli authorities stop impeding the overland delivery of food, medical supplies, and sanitary services, the U.S. is taking weeks to build a sea pier for the delivery of false propaganda that it cares about Gaza. If U.S. policy leaders truly cared, they could end the genocide in 24 hours!
If present conditions continue, the Democratic Party convention in Chicago on August 19 – 22 will become a memorial for 2.3 million Gazans. This would be the U.S. government’s most vile act of ethnic cleansing since the Trail of Tears, the forced removal of Native people from the Southeastern US in order to enrich slaveholders.
