The Status Quo Brings Death
to the Working Class
Revolution has become the Solution
The term “status quo” refers to the existing situation. It is a function of the class that controls the levers of power, that owns the tools and technology to make what we all need to live, that controls the military and the police, and that has the power to regulate the wealth of society.
Democratic Party:
In the US, the status quo is managed by the political authority of the ruling capitalist class. Along with Republicans, the Democratic Party is one of the key players keeping them in power. The role of the Democratic Party will be on display at the Democratic Convention in Chicago that begins August 19.
How will the Democrats address the status quo in:
Gaza: Last week Israel’s Zionist government assassinated leaders in neighboring countries, bombed Yemen, destroyed water in Gaza during a polio outbreak, and rioted against prosecuting Israeli Defense Force soldiers for raping Palestinian prisoners. Will they continue to support the status quo, or will they move toward demanding a permanent ceasefire and arms embargo against Israel? The status quo is death and destruction.
Environment:
The status quo dictates that energy corporations control petroleum production and other sources of fossil energy, and constantly overproduce them for profit, destroying our climate. This summer, once again, heat domes are killing uncounted numbers of people. Tornadoes and wildfires destroy homes and force people to become houseless. Will Democrats continue to support the status quo, or will they finally fully embrace the Green New Deal? The status quo is death, heat, and disasters.
Housing:
Housing is being transformed from its basic residential function to being an investment property, all due to the domination of corporate landlords. Financializing housing makes it unaffordable for most people in the US. The solution pushed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, is to make homeless camps illegal and wipe them out. Will Democrats follow Newsom, or will they fight for the social housing advocated by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Ro Khanna? The status quo is death and homelessness.
How do we change the status quo?
Every revolutionary and every American faces the same question: is it even possible to change the status quo? And, if so, how? The iron law of revolution is that it cannot grow solely through the struggle for reforms – revolution must be introduced by revolutionaries, and that can only happen in the course of the struggle for reform, including voting. This means that the path to overthrowing the status quo and building a just and sustainable society is to participate in the struggles to reform the system as a means to build the political power of the 99% of us who do not benefit from the status quo.
“Workers being displaced by the market are becoming a revolutionary class, because we have no stake in the system and cannot survive without confronting it. We need food, housing, education, and healthcare. We need an opportunity to contribute to society and to help save the planet. We need freedom from police terror, mass incarceration, and gender oppression. We fight for a government that takes care of people first. Ultimately this requires public ownership of the means to create wealth – the land, infrastructure, and technology – and distribution according to need. The fight for basic needs propels every other social struggle, because none of society’s social, moral, or ecological problems can be solved as long as the private property system exists.” — League Program: https://lrna.org/program
