UKRAINE: End War by Eliminating Capitalism
UKRAINE
End War by Eliminating Capitalism
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Joe Biden spent the past week at the United Nations and in Washington promoting the war in the Ukraine and raising money for arms. The take included $325 million in arms and munitions from the US. While Zelensky and Biden tell us that war is heroic and morally just, the truth is that war is not waged for ideals, the goals are profit and power.
Wars are fought and paid for by the displaced, working, and poor people of the world who suffer and die so that the rich can get richer. While Capitalist war has always sacrificed working, poor, and black and brown people, modern warfare increases our pain and suffering.
Today, battles are remotely fought with civilians as the targets. Over 90% of war-time casualties are civilians. We see this every day in the destruction of homes, hospitals, and schools in the Ukraine, Sudan, and Yemen and the misery caused by multiple conflicts worldwide.
The American people have proven time and time again that we will fight for democracy here and throughout the world. This dedication to the cause of democracy is used by the Capitalists in their fight for wealth and power not for justice and peace.
When the US government tried to force Muhammad Ali to fight in the Vietnam War, he said:
“Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on Brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights? No, I’m not going 10,000 miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over. This is the day when such evils must come to an end.”
Similar to the people of Ukraine, we are at war to protect and expand our freedoms and ensure healthy, safe, and comfortable lives for all. The only way to win this war and to end war itself is to destroy it at its roots – Capitalism. The end of private corporate property and the profit system it supports is the path toward peace, freedom, and a secure future for our children.
