Poets will come together virtually, to share their work responding to American fascism. The murder of Gorge Floyd, the January 6th insurrection, and the accelerated efforts as voter suppression underline the reality and growing awareness of fascism in the US. This reading/performance, the “Red Carnation International Reading” is part of an international effort to commemorate the April 25, 1974 overthrow of the fascist dictatorship in Portugal in their Carnation Revolution and the ongoing necessary struggle
Jack Hirschman who heads the coordinating committee of the World Poetry Movement and the works within the San Francisco Revolutionary Poets Brigade, will open the reading and will be joined by Portuguese poet Luis Filipe Sarmento. More than a dozen Chicago and midwest poets will participate, each reading one poem and taking part in a discussion of the poetry and the arts have in the fight against fascism today.
