UAW ON STRIKE
An Old Battle in a New ERA
The growing struggle for economic survival surged forward last week as the UAW went on strike against the Big Three Automakers. The UAW is the biggest industrial union in the US and its workers joined a working class fight that includes railroad workers, UPS drivers, actors and screenwriters, teachers, graduate students and teaching assistants, workers in coffee shops, bookstores, legal clinics, hotels and a beer factory and will soon be joined by health-care workers and video game programmers.
As the UAW’s President Shawn Fain wrote: “This isn’t just our fight, it is the working class’s fight.”
A FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL
The American working class, and indeed, workers throughout the world are rising up and demanding livable wages and better working conditions. These demands come as the number of poor, hungry, and unhoused rapidly climbs and those lucky enough to have a job are rapidly sliding into poverty. This is a struggle between the working people who produce wealth and the capitalists who steal it. As one worker from the Jeep factory in Toledo, Ohio said, “People are realizing that the bigger higher-ups, the moguls and millionaires, the billionaires, are getting way more than what they are giving.”
The UAW is pushing forward the struggle to simply live in America. As this struggle moves forward, we all see that the world is on the verge of historic changes. Today AI and robots are replacing and restructuring work, slowly ending capitalism, an economic system that depends on the buying and selling of labor power. Production without labor demands that the goods produced be distributed without money. There is simply no other way. The method of production is at war with the method of distribution. A new world demands new strategies, tactics, and goals.

Program of the League of Revolutionaries for a New America

“Humanity has the potential for economic security and abundance. A community of the people, by the people, and for the people, where children can grow in peace, is possible as never before. Or–if we do nothing—we face increasingly unlivable conditions caused by private ownership of the wealth that human labor has created. The purpose of the League of Revolutionaries for a New America is to build consciousness and unity among the most impacted workers, to be able to secure the needs of humanity and avoid the destitution and environmental disaster threatening life on our planet as we know it.”
The Voices of the League series of articles are intended to encourage a dialogue with developing revolutionaries. We highlight issues of the day and areas of special interest to new revolutionaries to provide a guide to action. Please make your thoughts known by commenting at the end of the article.
