To End Police Terror, We Need to End Capitalism

500 Fatal Police Shootings and Counting in 2024, over 1,100 in 2023¹: On June 28, 13-year-old Nyah Mway was shot dead by Utica, NY police².^.Nyah Mway is another victim of this relentless police assault on human dignity and life. Nyah Mway was stopped by police in connection with an “armed robbery investigation”. The police said that he appeared to have a weapon in his hand, pinned him to the ground and executed him.

“Police are Supposed to be Protectors. If they really did that, then how can we trust the police?”² (Thuong Oo, Nyah Mway’s brother)

Who Do the Police Protect? Our entire legal system, all institutions, are set up to grow and protect private wealth … wealth that grows from robbery and corruption. If the main function of the police was to stop crime, they would arrest the Capitalists, the true criminals. Instead:

If starving people are in front of a grocery store, police will protect the food, not distribute it.

If unhoused people are demanding access to empty homes, police will protect the owners

If we are protesting environmental destruction, police will protect the polluters

If ……. . .

Who Controls the Police? The police are bodies of armed people whose main role is to defend the state. Since the Capitalists control the government, the primary job of the police is to protect private property, exploitation, and continued accumulation of wealth.

Why did the Police Stop Nyah Mway? Stopping of Nyah Mway as part of an “armed robbery investigation” was not a random act by rogue cops. It is part of a systematic suppression of all poor, displaced and working people regardless of the color of their skin, gender identity or ethnic origin. Violence and terror are key tactics that the police use in their job.

Are Police Terror and Fascism Connected? Our current “democracy” is bribery, corruption, and fraud, backed up by police violence and terror. Fascism is police violence and terror, backed up by bribery, corruption, and fraud. The open terrorist rule of the minority.

How Can We End Police Terror? As long as the state is set up to protect private property and the people who own it, our “elected” officials and the courts will not reform the police. The only way to end police terror is to strip the capitalists of their claim to own the wealth of humanity as their private property. We the people who must work for a living need political power. We all need to guarantee that government meets the needs of all people and not billionaires.
