Students at universities across the country are responding to the arrests of Columbia students who camped out for Palestine. Palestinian solidarity protests and encampments are appearing on college campuses from Massachusetts to California to protest Israel’s attacks on Gaza and to call for divestment from Israeli apartheid.
Anti-Zionism vs Antisemitism
Columbia’s justification for the arrests is the absolutely bogus merging of anti-Zionism with antisemitism. For hundreds of years, antisemitism has meant hate attacks on Jewish people, or the Jewish religion. American fascism completely distorts this meaning to serve its own ends. It is ridiculous to assert that anyone opposed to the genocidal political policies of a settler colonialist government is hating on Jewish people.
This lie actually covers the rise of national fascist-inspired antisemitism, Islamophobia and the increasing calls for the US to become a religious dictatorship and to end democracy. The reactionary Zionist government of Israel reveals what can happen when one religion is privileged over all others.
Project 2025 & Heritage Foundation
The fascist think tank, the Heritage Foundation, has published Project 2025, which presents fascist goals for the US. Among other things, it calls for the Bible to determine the laws of this country.
The George Floyd rebellion in 2020 showed that our new generations are demanding the right to determine our future. The global rebellion against genocide in Palestine is another step forward. With the understanding that silence is complicity, thousands of us recognize that this status quo requires a revolution in morality, in society and in government.
Our country and the world stand at a crossroads. We can seize the times. Victory cannot be won without class unity based on exposure and rejection of the white supremacy and hetero-patriarchy so deeply rooted in the structure of the American economy, politics, and history. In the practical struggle, people are uniting from below. The growing equality of misery is forming them into a social force. We rely on this developing practical unity to build conscious political understanding. Victory cannot be won until we gain the political power necessary to defeat fascism and organize the cooperative society that is both possible and needed.
