Government Shutdown is a Crime Against America
Politics today is all about political power, not governing and solving real problems. It is Performance Politics designed to divert us from demanding government solutions to real problems.
After a week of Performance Politics featuring the drama about the government shutdown, the next act is scheduled for November 17 when we will relive the whole crisis. The corporate Democrats herald this as a victory of reason and bipartisanship. The twin parties of capitalism give us nothing but bullshit.
While the threat of a government shutdown is portrayed in the media as actions of a MAGA minority of lunatics and clowns, there is a real goal. MAGA Republicans are part of a broadly-organized corporate attack to dismantle the federal government. Their outspoken goal is to destroy “The Administrative State”. Their targets are government programs that actually help people and control the corporate rape of the environment, our schools, and our lives. It is not only the Republicans, Democrats also want to abolish “Big Government”, so they stand aside and do nothing, pretending their hands are clean.
Neither party of capitalism has any real solution for the crises we are facing. Both push the policies of extractive capitalism and Performance Politics. Americans have never been here before: Unending climate disasters, ever-increasing rents, gig jobs without health care, public education collapsing – billionaires and their parties are simply not going to give us the government we need.
Ultimately this requires public ownership of the means to create wealth – the land,
infrastructure, and technology – and distribution according to need. The fight for basic needs propels every other social struggle because none of society’s social, moral, or ecological problems can be solved as long as the private property system exists.
