The 2020 U.S. elections and now the 2022 midterms promise to be the most important since the Civil War and Reconstruction era. What is the terrain on which we are fighting in the Midwest? How do revolutionaries participate in an admittedly limited electoral process to achieve the ultimate strategic goals of a society that benefits all and in which everyone can contribute their talents? Other than preparing for the Chicago 2023 elections, what do we do after November 8?

The 2022 midterm elections are happening in the midst of a social and constitutional crisis that has sharply escalated since 2020. In less than two years, the ruling class has responded with the attempted coup of January 6, the coordinated state-by-state campaign against voting rights and the right to protest, the attack on the electoral process itself, and the judicial coup carried out by the U.S. Supreme Court culminating in its rulings of June 2022. In Illinois, we face a heavily financed attack to elect a governor even further to the right than Bruce Rauner, and State Supreme Court elections that could shift the balance of the Court against such basic rights as reproductive freedom and health care.
