Joe Biden to Gaza: “No Ceasefire!”
On March 7 President Joe Biden strolled into the Capitol to deliver a much-awaited “State of the Union address.” He proceeded to give what amounted to a campaign speech two days after many thousands of Democratic primary voters voiced their desire for a Gaza ceasefire by voting “uncommitted,” and where the vast majority of American workers are fed up with unlivable wages, high rents and the threat of mass homelessness. Biden addressed these concerns with pure subterfuge: 1) he proposed building a “temporary sea pier” for Gaza, and 2) he insisted that the U.S. economy is the “envy of the world.”
Sigrid Kaag, the U.N. official in charge of aid for Gaza, dismissed the pier proposal by stating “aid and sea is not a substitute for land and nobody says otherwise.” A displaced Palestinian man sheltering in Rafah pleaded that “instead of telling us they will build a port to help us, stop the weapons they throw at us. All these American weapons are killing our kids, and killing us wherever we go.” The pier takes two weeks to build, too little too late for 2.3 million starving refugees undergoing daily lethal assaults with arms provided by the most powerful country on earth.
There is no doubt that the U.S. economy is the “envy of the world’s…billionaires.” Three years ago, the working class suffered a million deaths from COVID, and when the pandemic income supports were pulled back, poverty rates doubled. The U.S. ruling class is building useless piers and crowing about the economy while we suffer under its callous rule. The only way out is to build a political party based on working-class unity, take power and begin constructing a society that serves the interests of humanity and not a handful of billionaires.
